Simple Overnight Shift Cutoff
What is the Overnight Shift Cutoff functionality in Simple? The Overnight Shift Cutoff is the moment we use to decide what day a work shift belongs to for overnight shifts that start late at night and end the next morning.
Watch the video tutorial here:
Start-Based Rule (IN Punch Rule)
Example: If the Overnight Shift Cutoff time is 3:00 AM and you clock in at 2:30 AM, your shift is counted as part of yesterday. If you clock in at 3:15 AM, it counts as today’s shift.
- This rules looks at when you clock in.
- If you clock in before the Overnight Shift Cutoff time, the shift is counted for the earlier date.
- If you clock in after or at the Overnight Shift Cutoff time, it’s counted for the later date
End-Based Rule (OUT Punch Rule)
- This rule looks at when you clock out.
- If you clock out before the Overnight Shift Cutoff time, the shift is counted for the earlier date.
- If you clock out after or at the Overnight Shift Cutoff time, it’s counted for the later date.
Example: If the Overnight Shift Cutoff time is 3:00 AM and you clock out at 2:45 AM, it counts as yesterday’s shift. If you clock out at 3:15 AM, it counts as today’s shift.
Split Rule (Split at Overnight Shift Cutoff)
- If a shift goes across the Day Change Time, we split it into two parts.
- Part 1 ends at the Overnight Shift Cutoff time.
- Part 2 starts at the Overnight Shift Cutoff time. This way, each part goes to the right day.
Example: If you're working from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and the Day Change Time is 3:00 AM:
- 10:00 PM–3:00 AM = goes on yesterday
- 3:00 AM–6:00 AM = goes on today
Note: If you punch and then transfer, or at any other time, those punches remain linked to the original set, even if they happen after the cutoff.
